Frequently Asked Questions
The Applied Ecological Research Centre (AERC) is primarily focused on promoting sustainable ecological research and conservation practices. We aim to bridge scientific knowledge with community-driven solutions to address Uganda’s most pressing environmental challenges.
Through habitat restoration, biodiversity assessments, and ecosystem education, we work to protect natural ecosystems while improving livelihoods. Our projects often combine traditional ecological knowledge with modern science to ensure both relevance and impact.
There are many ways to contribute to our mission. You can volunteer, participate in citizen science projects, sponsor a specific program, or donate to support our ongoing research and community initiatives. Every contribution helps us expand our reach and deepen our impact.
For those interested in partnerships, we also welcome collaborations with universities, NGOs, and businesses. Our “Get Involved” section offers guidance on how to join our cause—whether through direct action or financial support.
AERC conducts multidisciplinary research in areas such as biodiversity conservation, ecosystem health, forest ecology, wetland restoration, and the socio-ecological impact of human activities. We prioritise research that has direct, practical applications in conservation and community development.
Our work also includes long-term ecological monitoring, impact assessments, and policy-oriented research. We publish findings, contribute to environmental education, and support students and young scientists in conducting fieldwork across Uganda.
Community engagement is at the heart of everything we do. AERC works closely with local residents to identify environmental challenges and co-create solutions that are culturally appropriate and sustainable. We believe that empowering people leads to lasting change.
This means training community members in conservation techniques, involving them in restoration activities, and supporting sustainable livelihoods. Our participatory approach ensures ownership, resilience, and long-term success of ecological programs.
Yes, AERC offers opportunities for students, researchers, and early-career professionals. These include internships, field training programs, and research supervision in collaboration with universities and institutions in Uganda and beyond.
Participants gain hands-on experience in ecological monitoring, species identification, data collection, and community engagement. Our programs are ideal for those pursuing studies in environmental science, conservation, or related fields.
Since its establishment, AERC has restored multiple degraded ecosystems, conducted biodiversity surveys in under-researched areas, and influenced local conservation policies. We’ve also trained local communities and students in ecological practices and conservation ethics.
Our work has contributed to protecting endangered species, improving ecosystem services, and raising environmental awareness in both rural and urban areas. With each project, we aim to leave a footprint of resilience, sustainability, and knowledge sharing.
